We are continuingly updating our processes to keep in line with the current guidelines  to keep our patients and staff safe.    We will continue to offer virtual appointments as a permanent option.

Anyone with current respiratory symptoms will not be able to enter the building .  We can offer you a  phone consult, or arrange for you to be seen in the Red stream - Please do a RAT test before being seen if you have some at home.

Visitors to our area during weekdays will need to access care at Accident and Healthcare, 2nd Ave Tauranga, or via the Te Korowai GP clinic run at Thames Hospital.

For after hours care over public holidays & Weekends if you are a registered patient of a local practice please ring your usual  clinic number and you will be transferred to their AH triage service.  Visitors can access healthcare via Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Our phones may be overloaded at times - please be patient - we are here for you. Consider emailing us if it is a non urgent enquiry (ie prescriptions or  non urgent appointments)

Appointments

Please ring 07 863 2112 for an appointment. We encourage you to book routine appointments  (ie medication reviews) with your registered GP for ongoing continuity of care.   Appointments can be in person or virtual (phone or secure video link).   Please note that due to current workload since COVID-19 it may take 2-4 weeks to get an appointment so we encourage you to book early.    Also if you have a number of items to discuss, or the appointment is for a medical, ie Drivers licence, please let the receptionist know, so we can book a longer appointment as appropriate.

Home Visits

These are available for our palliative patients or as by special arrangements.

Urgent Clinic

Monday to Friday 8.30 to 12 noon

Our urgent clinic is now being run as a GP triaged clinic.

This is for urgent medical issues or injuries.    You may be managed virtually, rebooked into a routine GP appt,  or provided with an urgent prescription if appropriate, if an appointment is not deemed necessary.

Please ring prior to 9.30 if possible so that we have an opportunity to allocate you an appt time.

If you are seriously unwell with chest pain or shortness of breath we encourage you to seek immediate review with St John Ambulance by ringing 111 as their skilled staff will  provide timely assessment & treatment.

After Hours Care

This practice provides 24 hour care for patients on a roster system shared with GPs from a neighbouring practices. Please ring the normal surgery number, 07 863 2112, and your call will be put through to the on call Triage Nurse service provided by Healthline.   They are able to discuss and seek advice for you from the on call doctor as required, or will recommend you seek review at hospital if deemed urgent.

Laboratory and Radiology

PATHLAB - Blood tests can be done at any Pathlab throughout the Waikato & Bay of Plenty. Our local Pathlab in Waihi is located at 2 School lane, and they are open 7.30am - 3.30pm Monday - Friday.

Routine blood tests results are usually available within 24-48 hours, however special tests including smears, urine and pathology (skin lesions) may take several days to several weeks. Our policy is to only contact you to advise or discuss any significant results.

You are encouraged to ring our nurses (ext 1) to check or discuss your results, especially if you have any queries. If you would like to be automatically informed of all results we encourage you to sign up to
Manage my Health.

RADIOLOGY - There are multiple private radiology providers within the Waikato  & BOP.

  • Privately funded  or ACC xrays & USS can often be done at the location of your choice - these are often limited to the city locations with a few town options (ie katikati for ACC xrays)

  •  Publically (hospital)  funded routine xrays & USS are often  oursourced to private providers WITHIN that region.     POAC (primary options) can fund some urgent radiology for  urgent conditions (ie DVT scans, gallstones) in order to prevent  ED assessment,  but are also contracted to radiology providers WITHIN  the region you reside in.

What Hospital do you refer to?

This is a common question we are often asked.   Although Waihi Family Doctors is a practice located with the Te Whatu Ora (TWO)  Waikato Catchment,  we have the capacity to refer to the neighbouring Te Whatu Ora BOP Tauranga Hospital -  however the old DHB boundaries continue to exist and acceptance to a public hospital service currently depends on your home address.

TWO Waikato Hospital - Those living in the Waikato - Waihi, and north of Waihi.    General medical and surgical outpatient services are provided at Thames Hospital, however many specialist or tertiary services (such as cardiothoracic surgery) are provided at Waikato Hospital.

Bay of Plenty WHO Tauranga Hospital- Those living in the Western BOP - Waihi Beach, Athenree, and Katikati
St John Shuttle can provide transport to Waikato and Thames Hospitals. Some patients are entitled to National travel allowance.

Private referrals to specialists are not restricted to location, and we are able to refer you to the specialist of your choice in Tauranga, Hamilton or anywhere within NZ through our electronic referral system.
