Waihi Family Doctors is proud to be a CORNERSTONE® accredited practice
Please ring 07 863 2112 for an appointment. We provide booked appointments with your preferred GP, and also an urgent clinic for acute unwellness, or accidents every morning.
During COVID-19 all consults are considered virtual first, and you will be offered a phone or video consult with your doctor. We will arrange a different time to bring you in for examination if this is required. We may ask you to take photos or send us video to help us with your concerns.
Longer consultation times are available, so please ask our receptionist if you require some extra time. Appointments for special examinations, such as for Drivers medicals, Insurance and Occupational medicals are deferred during COVID-19.
If you or a family member requires an interpreter service, we can organize this for you. Please let us know this when you make the appointment.
Home visits are available for regular patients whose condition prevents them from attending the surgery. This requires prior agreement of the GP and will need to be discussed with them as during COVID19 we need to be able to take extra precautions to keep everyone safe.
Manage my Health
We offer this service to our patients - this allows you to be able to access some of your health information via a secure website or app, request medications or securely message our nurse. Please ring and discuss registration with our reception team - you will need your own email address.
Laboratory and Radiology
Blood tests can be done at any Pathlab throughout the Waikato & Bay of Plenty. Our local Pathlab in Waihi is located at 2 School lane, and they are open 7.30am - 3.30pm Monday - Friday. During COVID-19 level 3 we are encouraging people to defer their 'annual' blood checks. We do encourage those who are on medications that need regular blood monitoring to continue to have these tests.
Routine blood tests results are usually available within 24-48 hours, however special tests including smears, urine and pathology (skin lesions) may take several days to several weeks. Our policy is to only contact you to advise or discuss any significant results.
You are encouraged to ring our nurses (ext 1) to check or discuss your results, especially if you have any queries. If you would like to be automatically informed of all results we encourage you to sign up to
Manage my Health.
After Hours Care
This practice provides 24 hour care for patients on a roster system shared with GPs from a neighbouring practices. Please ring the normal surgery number, 07 863 2112, and your call will be put through to the on call Triage Nurse service provided by Healthline. They are able to discuss and seek advice for you from the on call doctor as required, or will recommend you seek review at hospital if deemed urgent.
Monday to Friday 9am to 12 noon
During COVID-19 Our urgent clinic is now being run as a GP triaged clinic.
The GP will decide if you require examination and will arrange for you to be seen safely. You may also be rebooked into a virtual or in person consult with another GP in the regular clinic.
If you are seriously unwell with chest pain or shortness of breath we encourage you to seek immediate review with St John Ambulance by ringing 111.
What Hospital do you refer to?
Although Waihi Family Doctors is a practice located with the Waikato District Health Board (DHB) Catchment, depending on where you live (your home address), you may belong to either the Waikato or BOP DHB.
We have the ability to refer you to all the publicly funded services at both Waikato and Tauranga Hospitals, but can only refer you to the hospital within your DHB area.
- Waikato DHB - Those living in the Waikato - Waihi, and north of Waihi. Many General medical and surgical outpatient services are provided at Thames Hospital, however many specialist or tertiary services (such as cardiothoracic surgery) are provided at Waikato Hospital.
- Bay of Plenty DHB - Those living in the Western BOP - Waihi Beach, Athenree, and Katikati
St John Shuttle can provide transport to Waikato and Thames Hospitals. Some patients are entitled to National travel allowance.
Private referrals to specialists are not restricted to location, and we are able to refer you to the specialist of your choice in Tauranga, Hamilton or anywhere within NZ through our electronic referral system.
